My point at the end was not that we should...@Barry. My point at the end was not that we should have used stock photos, which, btw, would have appeared in a print piece. In fact, Sergey approved use of stock photos for online ads. His objection was to using stock photos to represent actual customers. At the time I was impressed with his insistence on authenticity and as I outline in my book, he was right about a lot of things that traditional marketing had taught me were antithetical to building a strong brand.

I would also point out that this happened ten years ago, when attitudes about corporate presence online were not as fully formed as they are today. A lot of the current attitude was, I believe, nudged along by the way Google presented itself on its own web pages.

The point I was making is that Larry and Sergey's overall discomfort with anything that could not be proven through data led them to discount the value of marketing as a practice and they continue to struggle with how best to integrate it into the company's business efforts.Doughttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03936482687131645878noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19073586.post-69173555924890632622011-03-21T01:41:49.028-07:002011-03-21T01:41:49.028-07:00Have a read of http://walkerparkmedia.com/good-pho...Have a read of http://walkerparkmedia.com/good-photography-matters-on-your-website for more modern takes on stock photography use online. Online, authenticity matters in a way it doesn't in one-way media like TV and print, because expectations of two-way communication are higher, and the humanity and honesty of a real voice is appreciated when it's heard, and more importantly, missed when it's not.Barry Kellyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10559947643606684495noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19073586.post-53743529630552662842011-03-21T01:36:50.068-07:002011-03-21T01:36:50.068-07:00My group once created some sales collateral for ou...My group once created some sales collateral for our advertising program that featured stock images of happy, smiling business people, along with actual quotes from real advertisers lauding our system. Sergey was outraged.

"Either use photos of the real advertisers, or don't use any photos at all," he told me. It was morally repugnant to him to deceive potential clients by misrepresenting our current advertising base. Clearly we were ethically challenged to even propose such a thing, though in my experience it was standard practice.

Sergey was 100% right. There are few things a company can do that instantly mark it out as soulless corporate entity out to f*** you over than stock photos of students and actors dressed up to look like people they're not. This standard practice is standard for a reason: most companies are out to f*** you over, they don't like taking risks, and the way every other company markets themselves to fit in with this crowd is by doing exactly this. Stock photos are the antithesis of authenticity.

Your cheap shot at the end is pretty unwarranted, IMHO. Google has a positive brand identity in large part because of how it hasn't gone with "standard practice" (where it has suffered most is not in marketing so much as a reputation for opacity, and lacking human escalations for customer complaints).Barry Kellyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10559947643606684495noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19073586.post-14701162449013800622011-03-17T14:05:16.714-07:002011-03-17T14:05:16.714-07:00That's a great article, never knew that you ar...That's a great article, never knew that you are a x-googler.
